Leeds nostalgia: Young angler Paul wins top fishing prize

Schoolboy angler Paul Bassinder wasn't telling the tale about the one that got away... but about the one he caught (and it was more than just a fish).

Paul, 16, finished top junior with the Featherstone and District Angling Association and in the process scooped himself a free fishing holiday on the Irish Sea.

Paul, pictured above, of Pontefract Road, Purston, scored twice as many points as his nearest rival to win the club competition.

The prize was donated by Jack Purchase, a travel agent who specialised in angling holidays in Ireland. He also donated three more holidays for future prizes and gave £500 to the club to help other young anglers. Paul said: “You can lose a bit of interest when you keep finishing in the first three.”
