Leeds nostalgia: Strong local ladies

In a region with a reputation as a female powerhouse we look at some of the strong ladies who have made the headlines over the years.

In 1966 we photographed former suffragette Mrs. Leonora Cohen at the site of the Barnbow Munitions Factory where she had helped injured women after the terrible 1916 explosion.

82 year old former Gaiety Girl Ruby Miller entertained everybody at Adel in 1971 just before her 82nd birthday and that pillar of Leeds Labour Alice Bacon was photographed with her ministerial dispatch box in 1970 (3).

In 1980 local girl Tessa Sanderson was getting ready for the Moscow Olympics and she made us proud in 1984 when she won the Gold Medal for Great Britain.

Huddersfield’s Anita Lonsbrough also brought back gold in 1960 and later swapped swimming pool for pen and paper when she became a successful sports commentator and journalist.
