Leeds nostalgia: Jeremy defies critics to win swim trophy in March 1984

Teenager Jeremy Grant, 13, was told he would never be able to swim but in March 1984 he helped Kippax Swimming Club win a top award.

Jeremy suffered from a permanently dislocated shoulder but he swam in a relay at the club’s annual gala and his side won.

As a birthday treat, he was allowed to collect the winner’s trophy in front of 700 swimmers from across the county.

His mother, Christine Grant, of Field End, said: “It was the proudest day of his life. The look of absolute joy and pride on his face when he stepped on to the winners’ rostrum is something we will never forget.”

Jeremy underwent extensive coaching to enable him to use his shoulder while swimming.
