Leeds nostalgia: Heart op tot takes first steps in 1987

Here is two-year-old Christopher Garlick, pictured this week in 1987 in the YEP. He was taking steps his family thought he might never take.

Christopher became the youngest Briton to undergo major heart micro-surgery after he had a valve implanted and a hole in his heart repaired at just 10 days old.

His condition was so serious that he spent months recovering from the operation and even technically died at one stage, losing consciousness for several minutes.

Aged 19 months in our picture, grandfather Roy Colton said: “We are so proud of him. It’s just absolutely fantastic. His mother is so proud and pleased. It was like having a pools win.”

The family had lived in Belle Isle but moved to Lancashire shortly after the picture was taken.
