Leeds nostalgia: Dance stepping back in time

I left school in July 1932 at 14 years of age and I had a job at the new Lewis’s store but it wasn’t going to open until September, so when I saw an advert for local girls to appear at the Hippodrome in a John Taylor’s revue in August, I applied and was accepted.

I appeared for a week and received 7/6 (38p). It was a lovely theatre, I was sotry to see it pulled down.

I am 6th from the right on the front row of the picture. On February 11, 2011, on pages 18 and 19, Bruce Smith did an aricle on my dancing years.

Rose Green, Holmwood, Leeds

According to a story which ran in the YEP on February 15, 2011, Rose was the only girl among five brothers at the family home in Delph Lane, Woodhouse, where she attended Lindsy Vickers Dancing School on Rampart Road. It cost a shilling a lesson.

When she landed the job at the Hippodrome, she said: “It was the first money I ever earned.” She later went on to appear in pantomime Robinson Crusoe at the Grand theatre, earning three shillings a show.

“I loved it,” she added.
