Leeds museum stages packed programme of school holiday entertainment

A programme of falconry displays got under way at the museum yesterday, providing visitors with an insight into a sport that has an unbroken tradition in Britain stretching back more than 1,000 years.

Featuring a range of birds of prey, the displays will take place on selected days until Thursday, April 14.

A host of other events with a medieval knighthood theme have also been lined up at the Armouries for the holidays. They include:

* Archery demonstrations and opportunities for visitors to try the sport for themselves;

* A squires’ tournament giving youngsters an introduction to the world of sword combat and jousting;

* Free screenings of films such as The Sword In The Stone, Justin And The Knights of Valour, First Knight and A Knight’s Tale.

* Craft activities that let children come up with designs for their very own crown or shield.

Armouries bosses are confident the programme will prove every bit as popular as the jousting tournament that was held on Easter weekend as part of the museum’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Events officer Gail Cockerill told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “We were thrilled with the success of our 20th anniversary Easter joust and the fun continues over the rest of the holidays with a busy family programme of medieval knights themed activities.

“Whatever the weather we have something on offer for everyone, from free film screenings and arts and crafts, to the squires’ tournament, archery and falconry shows.”

Entry to the museum is free but some activities carry a small charge.
