Leeds murder: Image of 21-year-old victim released by police

Detectives investigating the murder of a 21-year-old Polish woman in Leeds have today released a picture of the victim.

Daria Pionko was found on Springwell Road, Holbeck, at about 1.18am on December 23, having been seriously assaulted. She was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

A post-mortem examination confirmed she had died as as result of head and facial injuries.

The 21-year-old, who police say was a sex worker, was found in a “managed” red light zone created by city authorities for prostitutes to work without fear of police action.

Detectives from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said they were continuing to appeal for information and witnesses as they investigate the murder.

Miss Pionko was found on Springwell Road, Leeds, at about 1.18am on Wednesday, 23 December having been seriously assaulted. She died at hospital a short time later.

Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, who is leading the inquiry, said: “Enquiries are continuing into what has been the brutal murder of a young woman in Leeds.

“We remain keen to speak to anyone who was in the area of Springwell Road, Holbeck Road and Water Lane between 8pm on Tuesday, 22 December and about 1.30am of Wednesday, 23 December, or anyone who may have information.

“This was a sustained and vicious attack and it is absolutely vital that the person responsible is caught and taken off our streets.”
