Leeds man bit girlfriend on the cheek and threatened to throw acid on her

James Lyons was jailed for two and a half years over the violence which was carried out less than three weeks after he was released from prison.

Leeds Crown Court heard Lyons was the subject of a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim after he had previously harassed her.

Bashir Ahmed, prosecuting, said Lyons "rekindled" his relationship with the woman upon his release from prison on December 13 last year.

He attacked her on New Year's Day after he had spent the previous night taking cocaine and drinking with his friends.

The prosecutor said Lyons turned up "very drunk" at the woman's home in Osmondthorpe at 3pm.

She had packed his bags as she wanted him to leave.

Mr Ahmed said Lyons grabbed hold of the woman, bit her on the cheek and tried to strangle her.

He told her: "Shut your mouth, I will throw acid in your face."

Lyons, 25, left the property and the victim went to her mother's home.

Lyons turned up at the property while she was there and demanded that she come out of the house.

Police were called and arrested Lyons.

He was interviewed about the incident and said he had been drinking on New Year's Eve and during the next day and had taken cocaine.

Lyons, of Trafford Grove, Harehills, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and breach of a restraining order.

Ian Cook, mitigating, said: "He behaved in a disgraceful manner. That causes him concern."

Mr Cook said Lyons now accepted that his relationship with the woman was over.

Recorder David Osborne told Lyons: "Your response to the stresses of life is to get drunk and beat your partner.

"In those circumstances only an immediate custodial sentence could possibly be justified."
