Leeds libraries win two national awards
Leeds’ library service won two Highly Commended honours at the 2016 National Coding Awards last week.
The city’s Leeds Central Library and Headingley Library were recognised for their Hour of Code activity sessions last year.

Hide AdThe accolades honour schools, libraries and businesses which help adults across the UK to learn crucial digital skills.
Coun Debra Coupar, Leeds City Council’s executive member for communities, said: “We are working extremely hard to provide a wide range of learning opportunities and events at our libraries, and I am delighted that our Hour of Code activity sessions have been recognised with two National Coding Highly Commended Awards.
“It really is never too late to learn a new skill, and we are especially keen to open up the variety of opportunities which are available through coding to adults.
“It was fantastic therefore to see so many people take advantage of our Hour of Code sessions at both Leeds Central Library and Headingley Library last year, and we are looking forward to attracting more people to take part in our digital programme in 2016.”

Hide AdThe Hour of Code sessions, organised in partnership with Leeds Code Dojo, gave adults the chance to learn coding as a new skill last year.
They took part in online JavaScript tutorials and were given advice about potential job opportunities during the sessions from a tutor at Leeds Code Dojo.
The city’s library service also previously organised activities for the public including Code Club, Raspberry Pi and Minecraft.
It is now planning a range of new events this year as part of its digital programme and hopes to introduce sessions using Little Bits, Makey Makey and Sonic Pi.
