Leeds libraries open new chapter in city campaign

A campaign which aims to get more people using libraries across the city has returned for a second chapter.

A total of 36 libraries across Leeds launched the #Whatsyourstory campaign last year in the hope of encouraging more people to use their free services and workshops.

Now the initiative has returned this week and city library-goers Jean Murgatroyd and Bill Hyland have shared their experiences to inspire others.

Mr Hyland, 72, used Leeds Central Library’s Business and IP Centre, which gave him advice and support to help him launch a product he first invented in 1976.

And grandmother Mrs Murgatroyd used her local library to meet new friends by joining a weekly knitting group.

Coun Debra Copar, Leeds City Council’s executive member for communities, said: “Jean and Bill’s own personal stories really do highlight how varied our programme is at your local library, and why it is not always what people might expect.

“We had an amazing reaction to our first #whatsyourstory campaign last year, which really showcased the wide range of services available at your local libraries.

“It is great news therefore to welcome back the campaign in 2016, which we hope will attract even more people to not just discover what opportunities and facilities are on offer at our libraries around the city but also online.”

After accessing the city’s library services Mr Hyland’s four-in-one Burrfect deburring tool, aimed at plumbers who work with plastic pipes, is now on the market.

The campaign is looking for other city library users who can share their experiences to help encourage others to use the services.
