Top of the list is Wanstead in London, with a failure rate of 67.15 per cent, while the easiest place to pass is in Barrow-in-Furness, with just one in three drivers failing their first test.

“It is easier to pass in a rural setting than in a city one,” said Neil Beeson from Privilege which carried out the research based on Government figures. “Driving in quieter areas gives you more time to think, and you don’t feel as pressured from other drivers.”

The most common reason for failing, the analysis also found, was a lack of observation at junctions.
