Leeds city centre street goes car-free starting today

Greek Street is being pedestrianised to transform it in to the city centre’s largest outdoor dining area.

The road, which is undergoing a £20m rejuvenation, will be closed off to traffic as part of a six-month trial to turn it into a hub of activity.

To mark the occasion, several bars and restaurants in the area will be offering samples, promotions, live music and giveaways from 6pm tonight.

More events such as street parties will be organised throughout the summer. The move to pedestrianise the road follows on from the success of Merrion Street, which has become a key nightspot after it was closed to traffic in 2014.

Speaking previously about the plans, councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “We want Leeds to have the most vibrant city centre in the country.”

The six-month trial will see the road closed to traffic from 5pm to midnight on Thursdays and Fridays, and 1pm to 12am on Saturdays and Sundays.

The trial ends on October 30.
