Leeds care home rated '˜inadequate' after inspection

A Leeds care home has been rated inadequate by the industry watchdog after a snap inspection triggered by a police investigation into an alleged assault on an elderly resident.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) made an unannounced visit to Atkinson Court Care Home in Cross Green in September after they were notified about a resident receiving a “serious injury”.

A police spokesman told the YEP they received a report of an assault at the home on August 22 but the case has been closed pending further inquiries after the elderly resident was unable provide an account of what happened and no suspect was identified.

However, the subsequent CQC inspection report has now been published online and gives the home – which provides dementia nursing care – an inadequate rating overall.

Two of the five inspection categories, safety and leadership, were rated as inadequate and the remaining three categories as “requires improvement”.

The report said people “were not protected from abuse and avoidable harm” and noted staff used physical interventions to carry out care “without relevant training”.

Inspectors also reported that medicines were not safely managed and correct processes were not always followed when incidents occurred.

Other findings included no working TV in the main lounge of the dementia unit and, while noting there were “caring and positive interactions” between residents and staff, inspectors said they also witnessed resident “not always treated with dignity and respect”.

A spokesperson for the home, which is run by Priory Adult Care, said: “We take the CQC’s report seriously and we have put in place a robust and comprehensive action plan to address all the matters raised.

“Senior managers continue to work closely with the CQC and partner organisations to ensure that we deliver the high standard of care our residents and their relatives expect.”
