Firefighters have been called out to tackle a huge blaze at an “eco development” in Leeds city centre this morning.

A huge fire has broke out in a three-storey building in Leeds overnight. Around 1am, 10 fire engines rushed to a huge blaze inside a building in Central Place, Hunslet. The fire reportedly started on the third-storey of the building that is currently under construction.

West Yorkshire Fire and West Yorkshire Police remain at the scene although the blaze has now been reduced to just four engines. Follow our live blog below and refresh the page for the latest updates on this breaking incident...

The Yorkshire Evening Post has approached West Yorkshire Fire for an update on the ongoing incident.

Statement from West Yorkshire Fire

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire said: “We received multiple calls from members of the public around .15 am this morning, regarding smoke coming from the third storey of a timber-framed eco building under construction at Central Place in the Hunslet area of Leeds.

“Firefighters were on the scene in under 10 minutes (by 1:23 am) – we mobilised over 50 first responders in all, including aerial support and members of our Fire Investigation team. Crews from Leeds, Hunslet, Killingbeck, Stanningley, Moortown, Morley, Rothwell, Ossett, Cleckheaton, Mirfield, Featherstone, Skelmanthorpe and Illingworth have all been in attendance during the course of this morning.

“The fire was extinguished around .55 am and two crews remain on site damping down, with a further two crews expected to attend later this morning. The Fire Investigation team remains on site. No further information is available at present.”
