Human placenta found near West Yorkshire park

A member of the public contacted police after the dog they were walking found a suspected human placenta near to Hyrstlands Park, off Track Road, Batley, just after 9.30am this morning.

Officers and paramedics attended and following examination medics determined the organ – which was found in a red and white drawstring CEX bag – was a fully-grown human placenta.

Searches have been ongoing in the area by specialist officers today and police are liaising with local hospitals and NHS services.

Det Sgt Adrian Belle of Kirklees CID, said: “Extensive enquiries have been ongoing in the Track Road area and in wider Batley since the discovery of a placenta by a member of the public.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who can explain how the placenta came to be in this location. We do know the placenta was from a baby which had progressed to full term and are of course anxious to trace both the mother and the child to check on their welfare.

“Both will need medical attention if that has not already been provided and that is our overriding concern.

He added: “I really would like to stress to the mother that our main concern is to ensure you receive the medical help and support you or your child may need if you have not yet had it.
