Girl power helps boost Leeds hospice

Hundreds of women helped to celebrate the remarkable achievements of females from across the region for the30th anniversary of the Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards.

And their show of support and solidarity has helped to raise more than £58,000 for Sue Ryder’s Wheatfields Hospice in Leeds.

Fundraiser Georgina Abbott said: “A huge thank you to all the staff and volunteers at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice who helped make the 30th Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards a success and record year for us.

“It was an incredible day with almost 800 attendees joining us to recognise the outstanding achievements of over 70 inspirational Yorkshire women.

“In total the event raised £58,500 for Wheatfields Hospice which could cover the cost of 3,656 hours of incredible care to support people in the Leeds community to live the fullest live possible.”

Almost 800 packed into New Dock Hall at the Royal Armouries, in Leeds, for the awards, recognising inspirational women from across the region who have excelled in their field, shown bravery and strength in adversity, and forged trailblazing paths for others.

Among the big winners of the event, which was held on May 15, was Rotherham grooming scandal whistleblower Jayne Senior, who was named the overall Woman of Achievement 2016 as well as scooping the Community Impact of the Year accolade.

Guests at the gala including the original Calendar Girls who presented the special Yorkshire Rose Award.
