Get involved! Consultation on plans to extend Leeds's cycle superhighway

Consultation events start tomorrow on plans for a major expansion of the superhighway, which currently runs from Bradford to the western edge of Leeds city centre.

Proposals include extending the route into Leeds city centre and taking it south as far as Leeds United’s Elland Road ground.

A link to the city’s emerging ‘education quarter’ around Black Bull Street and Hunslet Lane is also under consideration.

Coun Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said: “We are keen to find out people’s views on the next phase of the cycle superhighway, which would boost cycling infrastructure in the city centre and to the south, encouraging people of all ages to cycle safely, boosting their health and helping to improve the environment in Leeds through reducing vehicle journeys.

“So we would encourage people to take part in this consultation by giving their feedback or attending one of the drop-in sessions which will be taking place.”

Wellington House, on Wellington Street in Leeds, hosts the first sessions from 11am to 2pm and 4pm to 7pm tomorrow.

Events will then take place on Briggate from 10.30am to 2pm and 4pm to 7pm on Wednesday.

St Matthew’s Community Centre in Holbeck will also stage sessions from 11am to 2pm and 5.30pm to 7pm next Monday, August 15.

The Bradford-Leeds superhighway opened in June amid criticism that parts of it bring riders into conflict with pedestrians.

Construction work is continuing on the rest of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority-backed scheme’s first phase, which will take the route out from the eastern edge of Leeds city centre to Seacroft.
