Initial figures from the city council suggest that the number of state school pupils achieving good grades in at least five subjects including English and maths has increased from 55.5 per cent in 2015 to around 59 per cent this year. And schools across the city have hailed the efforts of students.

This comes despite a record drop in GCSE passes nationally this year.
