Five people injured after taxi crashes with cement mixer truck

FIVE people suffered injuries including broken bones after the taxi they were travelling was in collision with a cement mixing truck in Leeds.

The incident at Mill Street, in the city centre, happened at 2.55am yesterday. (Dec 15)

Five people trapped inside the taxi were rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital.

Duty officer David Glover from West Yorkshire Police said: “The injured parties were checked at hospital and had some broken bones but not life-threatening injuries.”

Students who live nearby have spoken of their shock.

Leeds Beckett student Henry Burkinshaw, 19, said: “There were at least 20 emergency service officers surrounding the car.

“It was quite traumatising and made me feel sick because it made me think someone could have died there.

“They have been incredibly lucky to have survived that.”

Student Charley Kirton, 20, was one of the first to ring the emergency services. He said: “We were watching a film and heard a loud bang so went to the window and saw the car folded around the truck.”

Appliances from Leeds, Gipton and Cleckheaton attended.
