Operations at the site near Selby were due to cease from 31 March this year with the loss of up to 262 jobs, but the new deal secure up to 235 jobs - 85 per cent of those under threat - for the next 12 months.

Bosses at Eggborough Power Ltd said the development is the result of the signing a Supplemental Balancing Reserve contract with National Grid. Announcing that Eggborough was likely to close in September, bosses said the fall in power price with high carbon tax, meant it, was “unable” to cover its future operating costs.
