Driver near Leeds has 'lucky escape' after car hurtles off M1 into ditch

The driver of this smashed Peugeot had a 'lucky escape' yesterday after it veered off the M1 and flipped into a ditch.

Emergency services were rushed to the scene after the accident on the M1, near junction 43 (M621), at about 10am yesterday.

A red Peugeot careered off the road at speed and hurtled into a ditch, where it ended up on its roof with the driver inside.

First responder PC Martin Willis, who tweets as 'Motorway Martin', said the driver should "put the lottery on" after their lucky escape.

PC Willis said: "Amazingly the driver of this vehicle escaped with slight injuries when their vehicle left the carriageway on the M1 northbound this morning near junction 43.

"They should definitely put the lottery on! #luckyescape"

One lane had to be closed for 90 minutes while all emergency services attended the scene and the car was recovered.
