Dine in for a good cause

Marie Curie is calling on people to hold a ‘Dinner Down Memory Lane’ this October and instead of asking guests to bring a bottle or a desert, request a donation to the UK’s leading charity for people with any terminal illness.

Linda Sibbons from north Leeds staged a Dinner Down Memory Lane party last year after her mum, Anne Truckell, lost her battle with cancer in June 2014. Anne was looked after at home by Marie Curie nurses in her final days.

Linda said: “I cannot speak highly enough of Marie Curie. Thanks to the dedication and care of the nurses, Mum was able to die peacefully in the comfort of her own home with her beloved cat at the end of the bed. Fundraising for Marie Curie gives me and my husband the peace of mind that other local people will benefit from the service.  

“Our dinner party was a huge success and great fun was had by all. We based our menu on holiday memories as my mum loved going away and playing a fundamental role in family gatherings. We then went on to stage a second event - a traditional Christmas dinner - with family and friends as my mum liked nothing more than to gather people together during the festive period.”

Marie Curie provides expert hands-on care, emotional support, research and guidance. The money raised will help support its nurses care for people living with a terminal illness.

Jennifer Aspinall, community fundraiser for Marie Curie, said: “The £100 that Linda raised will fund five hours of care from a Marie Curie nurse which is vital for people living with a terminal illness in Leeds.”
