'You have wasted a lifetime on drugs and alcohol': Leeds burglars ransacked Beeston flat and even emptied the fridge and bathroom cabinet

Three burglars ransacked a flat in Leeds and stole jewellery and valuables worth £1,300 while the victim was working a night shift.

Dean Thomas and brothers Paul and Carl Sykes even emptied the fridge and bathroom cabinet during the raid at the property in Beeston.

Leeds Crown Court heard Thomas tricked the victim by making a phone call to ensure he was not at the flat before the trio carried out the burglary on September 15 last year.

Mehran Nassiri, prosecuting, said the victim lived in a bedsit flat on Parkfield Grove, Beeston.

Thomas knew a woman who lived in the same building and struck up a conversation with the man about looking for work while he was visiting.

The two men exchanged phone numbers in the days before the burglary.

Mr Nassiri said Thomas rang the man in the early hours of the morning of the burglary.

The victim said he could not talk because he was at work and hung up.

Thomas then enlisted the help of the Sykes brothers to commit the offence.

The brothers then entered the property through the front door.

Mr Nassiri said the three defendants "turned the flat upside down."

Items stolen included speakers, gold chains, a bracelet, watches, perfume, a tablet device and earrings.

Police were contacted and Thomas was arrested at the flat.

Paul Sykes was arrested in a nearby street.

A police officer forced the lock on a bathroom door in the property and found Carl Sykes standing on the toilet seat.

He was wearing the bracelet stolen in the burglary.

All three men pleaded guilty to burglary.

The court heard they have more than 150 previous convictions between them, including more than 50 for burglary.

Paul, 50, and Carl Sykes, 48, both of Cottingley Crescent, Beeston, were jailed for 21 months each.

Thomas, 50, of Thorpe Crescent, Middleton, was jailed for two years.

Lawyers for the men described how their offending was linked to long-term alcohol and drug misuse.

Jailing them, Judge Andrew Stubbs QC said: "You have wasted a lifetime on drugs and alcohol.

"It is causing problems to the wider community.

"You took as much property of value as you could get your hands on and ransacked the place.

"Everything from the fridge and bathroom cabinet."
