UPDATED: Two charged over armed incident at Elland Road Volkswagen dealership in Leeds
Two men were due in court today over an alleged armed confrontation at a Leeds car dealership.
Peter James, aged 61, of Gildersome Lane, Gildersome, and Samuel James, aged 54, of no fixed address, are charged with violent disorder.
It follows an incident on Thursday, October 31, which saw a group of men armed with what were believed to be machetes chase four men into the VW garage in Elland Road.
The pair were due to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court this morning.
A 37-year-old man from Leeds is in custody having been arrested yesterday in connection with the incident.
Four other men, aged 24, 28, 35 and 39, who were previously arrested remain on police bail pending further enquiries.
Detectives are continuing their investigation of the incident and seeking other suspects.
The charges come after an incident at about 9.50am on Thursday between a group of men who were not thought to be armed and several men wielding weapons.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Four men initially entered the premises and were followed by several other men in the possession of weapons, believed to be machetes.
“The armed men left the scene in a 4x4 Mitsubishi Shogun vehicle, which was subsequently damaged on steps outside the building and abandoned. The men then made off and nobody was injured.”
Police found a number of vehicles containing balaclavas, gloves and weapons during searches in the area after the incident. Several vehicles have been seized.
The police spokesman added: “Detectives are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and the reasons behind it.”
Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact police on the non emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
