There has been a spate of spitting incident over the past few months, with police reporting that some people are using the threat of potentially having Covid-19 to intimidate them.

A woman from Pudsey was arrested last month after allegedly spitting at a police officer's face and claiming she had coronavirus.

And a West Yorkshire woman who claimed she had coronavirus was sentenced to eight months in prison after spitting at a police officer in Bradford in early April.

Chairman of West Yorkshire Police Federation, Brian Booth, has told the YEP that such attacks are far from being isolated incidents.

He said: "Spitting at my colleagues is never acceptable, but it carries greater significance in the current climate and is leading the Government down the path whereby further civil laws to protect us are put in place. In essence behaviour like this will lead to a lockdown.

“Police are still going out and having to deal with incidents, whether it’s road traffic collisions, or serious crimes. We will still have scene guards, and if people are prepared to spit at officers, then they are probably not going to adhere to lockdown either.

“Additional powers may help in that situation."
