A man has been jailed after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Leeds.

Thomas McCarthy was sentenced to two years and eight months after being found guilty of two offences of sexual assault at Leeds Crown Court.

McCarthy, 54, of The Crescent, Tingley, committed the offences against the girl on two occasions.

A victim statement was read to the court on her behalf shortly before McCarthy was sentenced.

The teenager described the psychological trauma she had suffered since the offences.

She said: "Emotionally and mentally I have lost myself.

"I hated him to the point that I tried to scrub his dirty hand touches off me in the bath.

"I got to the point where I was too scared to sleep. I would find myself staying up to avoid nightmares.

"It caused me a lot of stress through the day because I cannot function properly."

Sean Smith, mitigating, said McCarthy has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and has struggled to get his medication in custody.

Sentencing, Judge Mushtaq Khokhar said: "I have no doubt in my mind that had she not been brave enough to call out, it would have continued."
