Teenager arrested after reports of youths smoking drugs and carrying machetes in Burmantofts

A teenage boy has been arrested after police received calls about a gang of youths armed with machetes.

Officers received reports that the group of young people were smoking drugs and causing a nuisance in Wepener Mount in Burmantofts on Wednesday, November 11.

The reports also said that the group were armed with machetes.

Local police officers from the East Leeds team went to the scene and arrested a 17-year-old boy.

He was arrested for possession of an offensive Weapon and possession with intent to supply a controlled drug.

He was later charged.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "On the November 11 2020, Officers from East Leeds Neighbourhood Policing Team attended reports of youths at a location on Wepener Mount in Burmantofts, Leeds.

"Officers were dispatched to the location following reports of youths smoking drugs, causing a nuisance and believed to be in possession of weapons namely machetes.

"Officers attended the location and a seventeen year old male was arrested at the scene for possession of an offensive weapon and possession with intent to supply a controlled drug.

"The juvenile male was later charged in relation to the possession of the weapon pictured and remains under investigation for drugs offences at this time.

"East Leeds Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to reassure the communities we serve that we take knife crime and associated criminality seriously, the carrying of any type of weapon is absolutely not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

Elsewhere in east Leeds, police have seen an increase in theft in the Saxton Gardens area.

Thieves are particularly targeting cars and other motor vehicles and mailboxes.

On saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9, PC Daniels and PCSO’s Johnson and Jagger conducted proactive crime prevention and engagement patrols in the area.

A number of letters and crime prevention leaflets were delivered to local residents providing information, advice and reassurance that patrols will continue in the area.
