Teen punched Harehills off-licence owner, took out machete and caused £3,000 worth of damage during row over drink costing £3.75

A teenage has been locked up after he was caught on camera punching an off-licence owner in the face and threatening him with a machete.

Lamar Jacobs took out the weapon after attacking the owner of the Booze 4 You store on Roundhay Road, Harehills.

The 19-year-old then used the weapon to cause £3,000 worth of damage by smashing the glass doors to the premises.

Leeds Crown Court was shown CCTV footage of the incident which took place on January 12 this year.

Jacobs entered the off-licence with two other males before there was a confrontation between the defendant and the shopkeeper at the till.

The court heard Jacobs handed over 30p for a drink worth £3.75p before walking away with the item.

The shop owner came from behind the counter to try to stop Jacobs leaving.

Jacobs punched the man in the face three or four times as the victim retreated behind the counter.

The victim then picked up a bat from behind the counter and went to chase Jacobs from the premises.

Jacobs thrust the weapon towards the shopkeeper a number of times.

Members of the public, including a child, witnessed the violence.

Jacobs used the machete to smash glass door panels as he left.

Police recognised Jacobs from the footage. They approached him in the street the next day but he ran off before he could be arrested.

He was arrested on January 15 but refused to comment when shown CCTV footage and being told that his fingerprints had been found at the scene.

Jacobs, of Fearnville Place, Gipton, pleaded guilty to assault, making threats with a blade, theft and criminal damage.

He has previous convictions for robbery, assault and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The barrister said his client did not plan the attack but made a "stupid" decision to take out the machete during the confrontation.

Mr Stevenson said: "He is only a young man aged 19.

"He is completely compulsive and makes poor decisions.

He is going to have to learn from his mistakes pretty quickly or he is only going to have longer and periods in custody.

"He tells me he fell in with the wrong crowd which has not been good for him.

"He hopes that upon release from custody he can move out of the area and settle down with his girlfriend and find work."

Jacobs was sent to a young offender institution for 18 months.
