The Micra was followed onto City Square towards Quebec Street where Lumley undertook a taxi.

The officers signalled for Lumley to stop on Woodhouse Lane but he sped off along Wade Lane and Lovell Park Road.

Lumley, who had three passengers in the vehicle drove into a bus lane on the wrong side of the road on North Street.

The pair then slipped on ice and Lumley was handcuffed during the struggle.

The prosecutor said Lumley appeared to be under the influence of alcohol but refused to give a breath specimen after he was arrested.

Lumley pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, assaulting an emergency worker, driving while disqualified, failing to provide a breath specimen, criminal damage, having no licence and having no insurance.

He has 38 previous convictions for 131 offences.

Many of the convictions are for driving offences.

Robin Freize, mitigating, said Lumley accepted he must face an immediate prison sentence because of his driving record.

Mr Freize said: "There are no excuses. He is not trying to put a gloss on his behaviour.

The barrister said the Micra belonged to one of the passengers and he drove the vehicle knowing he did not have a licence and had been drinking.
