Posting to social media, the Wakefield Central NPT said: “If you’re shopping with cash, stay safe from pickpockets.

“Busy shops, Christmas markets and shopping centres are prime spots for pickpockets. They often work in groups and blend into crowds, so stay alert."

If withdrawing money from the bank, officers are encourgaing shoppers to place any money it a wallet or purse before leaving, and to consider using a money belt or a purse hidden under clothing.

Shoppers have also been encouraged to keep all purses and bags closed and secure, avoid leaving any bags on pushchairs or trolleys, carry bags in front or across your chest and to conceal wallets in zipped or buttoned pockets.
