West Yorkshire Police put out this urgent appeal after a car park in Wetherby flooded and 'a number of cars' were ruined in the flood water.

The force said that 'some cars can still be saved' and appealed for people who have cars there, or know someone who might, to act fast to fish their car out 'as a matter of urgency' while it is still safe to do so.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police, Leeds North East said: "Urgent...the Wilderness car park at Wetherby is flooding and a number of cars have been damaged.

"Some cars can still be saved however. If you are parked there, please come and move your car as a matter of urgency. If can share this message it would be appreciated."

The urgent message comes as flooding smashed other parts of Leeds. The River Wharfe in Otley burst its banks on Monday morning.Drivers in Otley were trapped in floodwater as a result.

Multiple urgent flood warnings have been issued after the River Wharfe burst in Otley, near Leeds, leaving a trail of chaos.

Residents who live near the river have been warned to take “immediate action” by the government’s flooding information service and to activate flood protection measures, including sandbagging their front doors.

Water levels hit peaks of more than 3.5m at 7am trapping shocked motorists in their vehicles.
