Police catch robbery suspect hiding behind bin after dramatic town centre foot chase
Police caught a robbery suspect hiding behind a bin after a dramatic town centre foot chase on Monday.
Officers in Pontefract town centre spotted the man on Monday morning - who then quickly fled through a market place, "past a Greggs and then back on himself" where he managed to evade the police.
However, officers used a live CCTV feed from cameras in the centre to track the suspect through town - while courageous members of the public helped by pointing out the direction in which he was running.
West Yorkshire Police – Wakefield East and South East police team said: "An extensive area search was conducted in the ginnels, which included checks of the steps leading onto the rooftops and in-between parked cars.
"The male was eventually found hiding behind a bin by the officer who had initially given chase and he was subsequently arrested by officers from the response team who had joined in with the search.
"The male was arrested on suspicion of Robbery and Theft from Shop.
"This arrest of one of our prolific offenders would not have been possible if it had not been for the quick thinking CCTV operators and the help from various members of the public."
West Yorkshire Police thanked the public for their help during the arrest.
So for that we say a big “Thank You” to the public for the part in which you played!
