Pervert filmed himself raping Leeds student while on bail for rape of a child

A man who filmed himself raping a Leeds student after a university night-out was on bail for raping a young child at the time.

Corey Furey, of Calder Drive, Huddersfield, was handed a lengthy jail sentence at Leeds Crown Court yesterday after pleading guilty to raping the 22-year-old student.

The 28-year-old, who was on bail for multiple child sex offences, including four counts of sexual assault by penetration of a child under 13, at the time of the incident targeted the “clearly drunk” victim after she had become separated from friends during a night-out.

Prosecutor Rebecca Randell, told the court how the 22-year-old had been out in Leeds celebrating the end of their time at university when she agreed to sharing a taxi with Furey. CCTV caught the moment the pair exited the taxi, where they were seen sitting on a step and talking, before disappearing behind a wall with the defendant later reappearing with his trousers and underwear round his ankles.

A passing bystander came to the aid of the “clearly scared and distressed” girl who told him “a guy has touched me.” The good Samaritan ushered the 22-year-old, who the court heard had a blood alcohol count of three times the legal limit at the time, inside his flat as he phoned the police. Furey repeatedly told the victim “I didn’t rape you, you consented,” and told arresting officers how he had videos on his phone that “proved his innocence.”

After seizing his device, the court heard how videos showed Furey raping the girl, who was “clearly intoxicated and struggling to stand,” from behind while repeatedly asking her if she consented to him ejaculating inside her.

Defence counsel Mr Hendron told the court in mitigation that his client’s guilty plea was his “best defence” as it showed “genuine remorse” and stopped the victim from having to relive her ordeal during a full trial.

He told the court how Furey had become an enhanced prisoner during his time at HMP Moorland, where he has asked to remain, and was “engaging fully” with rehabilitation work.

In a powerful victim impact statement, the court heard how the 22-year-old victim struggles to look at herself in the mirror and now had a “fear of unknown men” and repeatedly declines offers to go out with friends. Having fallen in love with Leeds during her time at university, the court heard how she had planned to move back but now “can’t stand the place.”

The brave victim also detailed how she was “scared I was going to hurt myself, kill myself,” and hadn’t taken her life in order to protect her family.

During sentencing, Judge Clark told Furey how he posed a “significant” reoffending risk to the public and clearly struggled from a lack of control for both adults and children.

He handed him a custodial sentence of seven years, to run consecutively with his existing 11 year sentence for child sex offences. His previously imposed sexual harm prevention order will remain in place indefinitely.
