Pensioner's neighbour thwarts burglars in Knottingley

TWO burglars fled an elderly man's home empty-handed after a neighbour challenged them during an incident in Knottingley near Pontefract.

Police said one man knocked on the pensioner’s door and distracted him while a second man entered the house on Aire View off Pottery Lane, Knottingley, at around 1pm on Monday January 25.

The suspects were disturbed by a neighbour who had seen them acting suspiciously and challenged them. The suspects got into a white transit van and drove off. The van was later recovered ne the Progressive Club, on Pottery Lane, in Ferrybridge.

It is believed the suspects then drove off in another vehicle.

The first suspect is described as a white man of medium build who was wearing a purple or blue puffa jacket and a red, white and blue bobble hat.

The second is described as a stockily built white man who was wearing blue tracksuit bottoms and a blue baseball cap.

Det Insp Dave Rogerson, of Wakefield CID, said: “The suspects have taken advantage of this vulnerable victim and I would ask anyone who saw or spoke to these suspects to contact the police.

“Residents may have had cold callers at their homes saying that they were on official calls.

“I would urge all members of the public not to let anyone who they don’t know into their house without first seeing official identification. If you are unsure, make the callers wait outside whilst you confirm who they are with the company.”
