Over 60 cars stopped on one Leeds road in Covid essential travel police operation

Over 60 cars were stopped over one weekend on a road in Leeds in a police traffic operation to ensure people are only travelling for essential purposes.

Officers from the Leeds West Neighbourhood Policing Team conducted a traffic operation on Carr Road in Calverley last weekend.

It aimed to ensure drivers and their passengers were complying with UK government restrictions on essential travel during the Covid pandemic.

Over 60 cars were stopped and in total two £100 Covid fines were issued, two tickets for failure to maintain headlamps were issued and two traffic offence reports were given for no MOT or no insurance.

One vehicle was also seized for having no insurance.

Police have said that over the next few weeks there will be frequent traffic operations conducted in the Leeds West area and urged people to only travel for essential purposes.

A post on the West Yorkshire Police Leeds West Facebook page said: "Over last weekend, officers from Leeds West Neighbourhood Policing Team, conducted a traffic operation on Carr Road in Calverley.

"This operation was conducted to ensure that drivers and their passengers were complying with UK government restrictions on essential travel during the pandemic.

"Over 60 cars were stopped.

"In total,

"2 x £100.00 Covid fines were issued;

"2 x tickets for failure to maintain headlamps;

"2 x traffic offence reports for no MOT and no insurance;

"1 x seizure of a vehicle for no insurance.
