Daniel Foley revved his engine, mounted the pavement and forced the victim to jump out of his way during the incident in Farnley, Leeds.

Leeds Crown Court heard Foley was the subject of a restraining order which banned him from approaching the woman or going near to her home when he carried out the offence.

"The defendant drove directly towards her and as a result she began to run.

"The complainant believed that the defendant was trying to run her over and feared for her life."

Mr Khan said the woman had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

Foley, 26, then got out of the car and followed her

He stopped a few metres away and told her he wanted to give their son some money.

Foley continued to follow her onto Whincover Gardens before she lost sight of him.

She then saw him on the grass verge outside her home looking up at the property.

The court heard Foley stayed in the area for a further 15 minutes before leaving.

He was arrested over the incident and denied being the driver of the car, claiming he did not have a licence.

Foley, of Bellbrooke Grove, Harehills, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and breaching a restraining order.

He has previous convictions for assault and harassment.

The woman provided a statement describing how the incident left her extremely distressed and shaken.

She said: "I do not feel safe going out of my front door.

"This has prevented me from going to work.

"All I care about is my family, my job and my home. Foley has managed to ruin all three of these in one day."

Anthony Sugare, mitigating, said Foley went to the woman's property with the intention of dropping some money off for their son's birthday.

Mr Sugare said the intention was for one of his friends to put the cash through the letterbox with a note so he would not be in breach of the restraining order.

He added that Foley then reacted badly after seeing his former partner.

Foley was jailed for 16 months.

Judge Christopher Batty said: "What you did upon seeing your ex-partner was utterly appalling.

"You drove at her and accelerated and put her in so much fear that she thought you were going to run her down.

"It is frankly terrifying and it must be met with a significant custodial sentence when considering the background of violence and harassment."

Foley was also banned from driving for two years and eight months.
