Motability scheme Mercedes driver in 120mph police chase in Leeds

A driver who suffers from epilepsy had taken cocaine and cannabis before driving  his Motability disability scheme car at up to 120mph during a police chase in Leeds.

Aaron Anson was wanted on an arrest warrant when police spotted him at the wheel of a Mercedes in the Hunslet area of the city, Leeds Crown Court heard.

Anson, 29, failed to stop and sped off on the M621 before joining the M62 westbound.

The court heard Anson had suffered a traumatic brain injury after being involved in a car crash when he was a teenager.

He drove at up to 120mph on the M62 during the ten minute long chase just before 5.30am on September 11.

Elizabeth Noble, prosecuting, said he exited the M62 at junction 27 and went through a red traffic light before joining the M62 eastbound.

Miss Noble said; "He went at up to 120mph and those high speeds were maintained throughout."

Anson went on to the M1 north at junction 29 and back on to the M621 towards Leeds before exiting at junction seven, where a stinger device had been set up by police.

Anson's car slowed down to a crawl and he was stopped and arrested.

Anson, who had been handed a six month driving ban in April 2019, tested positive for cocaine and cannabis.

Anson told the court the Mercedes was his Motability car and a friend was insured to drive it.

He said he ended up driving it after the two men had an argument.

Anson, of East Grange Road, Belle Isle, admitted dangerous driving.

He has 13 previous convictions for 24 offences including dangerous driving, drink driving and driving while banned.,

Victoria Smith-Swaine, mitigating, said: "He suffers from epileptic fits and seizures following a brain injury."

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC jailed Anson for ten months and banned him from driving for two years.

Judge Stubbs told him: "It was an appalling piece of driving."
