A man was tasered and arrested after people were threatened with a knife in Leeds city centre.

It happened at about 8.50pm on Thursday, July 8 in the vicinity of Vicar Lane, Kirkgate and New York Street.

Police received reports of a man threatening people with a knife.

Officers attended and found the suspect.

He was tasered by officers.

A knife was recovered.

The man was arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and possession of cannabis.

He remains in custody.

Enquiries are ongoing.

Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of Leeds District CID, said: “This incident was quickly brought to a safe conclusion through the swift actions of officers at the scene using appropriate tactics, without any injury being caused to members of the public

“The area was busy at the time and we believe the incident, which occurred over some distance, was seen by a number of people.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed any part of the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation.”
