On August 15, 2023 Rizwana Kousar was found unconscious in the bath at her home on Kensington Road in Bradford. She was taken to hospital but sadly died two days later.

The trial heard how Sami, 23, strangled his step-mother with her own headscarf.

Paying tribute, her family said: “Rizwana was a cherished daughter, sister, auntie, and friend, whose heart was always full of love and selflessness. Her kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone she touched, bringing warmth and joy into countless lives.

“The void she has left is immeasurable, and our hearts are shattered by her absence. Nothing can erase the profound pain and devastation that has engulfed our family, we hope only to seek justice for Rizwana. We would ask that our privacy is respected.”

A post-mortem examination revealed she had died as a result of brain injury caused by lack of oxygen.

Sami is due to be sentenced on March 20.

Senior Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Matt Holdsworth of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said: “This was a deeply tragic case, and our thoughts remain with the family, and everyone affected by Rizwana’s death.

“This investigation has involved complex and technical investigation which has taken significant time to reach this point. We hope that this verdict brings some measure of comfort to those grieving and we will continue to support the family.”
