Man fled scene after he lost control of his car during police chase and crashed into a wall in Harehills

A man crashed his car into a wall as he tried to escape from police when they signalled for him to stop his car in Harehills.

Adrees Hussain was handed a suspended prison sentence over the incident on July 6 this year.

Leeds Crown Court heard officers saw a Toyota Yaris go through a red light as they were carrying out a search on Roundhay Road.

The officers followed Hussain, 20, as he drove onto Harehills Lane at speed.

The defendant refused to stop despite the officers putting on blue lights and sirens.

Hussain drove onto Brookfield Avenue and then onto Harehills Avenue and went through another red light.

He overtook two cars waiting at a crossing and went over the junction on the wrong side of the road without stopping.

Hussain then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall.

He returned to the scene a short time later with his aunt and uncle who made him give himself up to officers.

The incident lasted around 30 seconds.

Hussain, of Ashton Road, Harehills, made full admissions about the offence when interviewed.

He told officers he had been driving his car when he saw a fight in the street.

The defendant said he drove off when he saw a man coming towards his vehicle on foot covered in blood.

Hussain said he panicked when he saw he was was being followed by the police vehicle and feared it was linked to the earlier incident.

The court heard Hussain has no previous convictions or cautions.

She added: "He can't explain why he did something so stupid.

"He returned a very short time later when he admitted it was his car and responsibility.

"He is a young man who is focused on his career and making his family proud. He severely regrets what has happened."

Hussain was given a ten-month sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He was also ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
