Man dragged from wreckage and driven away after smashing into lamppost on York Road

Police closed York Road last night after a driver crashed into a lamppost before being driven away.

West Yorkshire Police were called to the A64 York Road, near to Aldi and the junction with Cross Gates Lane, just before 8.30pm last night (Sunday, April 19).

The driver of black Volkswagen Touareg crashed into the lamppost, causing significant damage to it and to the vehicle.

Witnesses reported seeing a man helped from the Volkswagen and driven away from the scene in a black Mercedes.

Police later found the Mercedes empty and are currently examining it.

A road closure was put in place while the debris was cleared away.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident and identify those involved.
