Leeds General Infirmary evacuated and man arrested after fire is started on hospital ward

Staff and patients were evacuated from Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) after a fire was started on one of the wards.

Enquiries are ongoing this evening following an incident at a hospital in Leeds.

 

 Police were called to the Leeds General Infirmary at about 17.54 to a report of a man in possession of a screwdriver who was causing damage in a unit, had made threats, and was attempting to start a fire.

 

The area was evacuated, and officers attended, located and arrested a man.

 

 

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the hospital and extinguished fire inside the affected area.

 

 

No-one is believed to have been injured in the incident.

 

 

Police remain on scene and the suspect remains in custody.

He has been told been told three fires have been set off deliberately, but this has not been confirmed by emergency services Our reporter Joe said: “The fire service appear to be bagging up evidence. Police diverting traffic on main road. Patients were being evacuated but the police cordon is being taken down"

Buses unable to go down Clarendon Way next to the hospital

Emergency services are at Leeds General Infirmary after a suspected fire.

A man who used to work in the building told the YEP: “I heard that the smoke was filling up the corridors from A and E up to ICU and Theatres (one level up).”

He said a police cordon had been put up outside the building.
