Leeds teenager appears in court on attempted murder charge after man suffers stab injuries to the head in Beeston

Osvaldo Rodriquez appeared before Leeds Magistrates Court in connection with an incident on Dewsbury Road, Beeston, on Saturday (June 6).

A 21-year-old man was stabbed in an alleyway between the Abu Bakr supermarket and the BFC chicken shop.at around 5pm.The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and received stitches to lacerations to the back of his head.

His injuries are not considered life threatening and he remains in hospital.

Rodriquez, of Longroyd Grove, Beeston appeared in the court dock alongside two security officers.

He wore a grey tracksuit and was also wearing a protective face mask.

He is charged with attempted murder and possession of a knife.

The charges were not put to the defendant who spoke only to confirm his name and to state his date of birth and address.

Rodriquez was told the charges were so serious they could only be dealt with by a judge at the Crown court.

Outlining the details of the case, prosecutor Alex Bozman said the 21-year-old man suffered extensive blood loss from his injuries.

Mr Bozman said the man not yet given a statement to police who are continuing to investigate.

Rodriquez's mother sat in the public gallery during the ten-minute hearing.

An application for bail was refused by District Judge Marie Mallon.

The case was committed to Leeds Crown Court until July 6.

Rodriquez was told he will have to remain in custody until that date.

Detectives are still keen to trace any witnesses to the incident.

Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of Leeds District CID, said: “We believe there were a number of people in the area at the time of the incident and we are keen to speak to them to see if they have any information that could assist the investigation.

"I would urge anyone who did see what happened to contact us immediately.”
