Leeds student robbed car at knife-point then reached 130mph during M1 police chase in which officer was injured

A man robbed a car at knife-point in a Leeds street before driving the vehicle 70 miles as he was chased by police.

Josemar Da Silva reached 130mph, crashed into three police vehicles and injured an officer during the pursuit along the M1.

Da Silva, 26, was jailed for four years over the incident on June 3 this year.

Leeds Crown Court heard Da Silva targeted a 29-year-old woman as she was in her Renault Kadjar vehicle near his home on Cowper Street, Harehills, at 5.45pm.

The defendant pointed the weapon at her chest before ordering her to get out of the vehicle.

The defendant was carrying a bag of weapons at the time which included a saw.

Da Silva reached 130mph as he tried to get away from officers.

He collided with the central reservation and rammed police cars in pursuit.

One officer suffered ligament damage to his thumb and had to wear a cast after the incident.

Da Silva was arrested from the vehicle in the Derbyshire area..

Ian Brook, mitigating, said Da Silva was studying for a civil engineering degree and was working for Sports Direct and McDonalds when he committed the offences.

Mr Brook said Da Silva was suffering from mental health issues at the time and has no previous convictions.

A psychiatrist's report stated that Da Silva's condition had significantly improved since the incident and a hospital order was not required.

Sentencing, Judge Simon Batiste said: "It was extremely good luck that no one was seriously injured or worse."
