Prisoner who exposed himself to Leeds police officer and attacked guard facing deportation

A Leeds prisoner is facing deportation after attacking a prison guard and exposing himself to a police officer.

Maki Faisal, who is currently an inmate at HMP Armley, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Friday after admitting charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and of exposure.

The 39-year-old was sentenced in absentia after the court heard how the defendant had “laid in bed” and refused to attend his hearing. He previously refused to attend court by placing himself on the floor of his prison cell and refusing to move.

Prosecutor Robert Galley told the court how the defendant attacked prison officer Caldwell on January 18 this year when he attended his cell to tell him of his upcoming release. Faisal threw a shoe at PO Caldwell, before throwing a “heavy-duty” kettle and attempting to trip him.

The following day he was taken to Elland Road police station, where he exposed his penis to a female police officer and made aggressive remarks. The court further heard how he previously assaulted and exposed himself to an emergency worker and “inappropriately touched” a police officer in 2024.

The 39-year-old, of no fixed abode, was assessed for mental health concerns on January 15 just days before the latest incident, the court was told

Faisal was previously sentenced to 14 months in prison for possession of a bladed article, he also received sentences for an offence of stalking and for approaching two 16-year-old girls and making “inappropriate remarks,” Mr Galley told the court.

Before passing sentence, Judge Howard Crowson noted on the record that the defendant had waved his right to attend of his “own free will” and his right to legal representation. As such no mitigation was offered in this case.

Judge Crowson sentenced him to 24 weeks in prison for the ABH assault on PO Caldwell and a further four weeks for the act of exposure, to be served consecutively.

He is expected to be released into the hands of immigration authorities following the completion of his sentence.
