Police in Leeds have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man in Burmantofts.

At 8.14am on Thursday (January 1), police were called to Gargrave Court, where a man had allegedly attacked another man who was lying on the floor.

Officers arriving at the address promptly found a seriously injured man. He was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Following swift enquiries at the scene, police have arrested a 51-year-old man who has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder.

Detective Inspector Jodie Hayes, who is investigating the incident, said: “An incident of this nature will understandably cause concern in the local community, and an investigation is underway to establish how the deceased came to lose his life.

“Neighbourhood officers are patrolling the area to provide reassurance for residents, and I would urge people to speak with them if they have any concerns.”

The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team is investigating the incident and is currently searching for anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in or around Gargrave Court on Thursday morning.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them by calling 101 or using the online chat service, quoting log reference 0709 of 1 January.
