Some details of the fatal attack emerged this week when another defendant, Sean McCleary, was sentenced for a public order offence in relation to the incident.

McCleary was handed a 20-month sentence over the incident and for offences of violence towards his partner and a further attack on an Aldi supermarket security guard.

During McCleary's sentencing the court heard he was among a group of men who banged on Mr Smith's as they tried to "source drugs."

Alexandra Sutton, prosecuting, said members of the group became aggressive when the father-of-two refused to answer the door.

McCleary was seen kicking the door, shouting threats and aiming punches during the incident.

Sentencing McCleary, Judge Andrew Stubbs QC said: "You and a group of other men went to the address of another man hoping to obtain drugs from him.

"When he refused what took place was a violent incident, both in the street and in his home.

"One of your group brandished and threatened him with a bottle.

"The group moved up and down the street and another man punched him and knocked him to the floor and killed him.

"He falls to be sentenced later this month.

"You (McCleary) kicked through the door and aimed a punch.

"It is hard to imagine a more serious public order offence."
