Courtney Williams, 25, fled when officers saw him appear to carry out a drug deal in the Lincoln Green area of Leeds on May 16 this year.

Francis Pencheon, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court that Williams was carrying a bag when he ran off.

The officers arrested Williams a short distance away at Gym LS7, on Roseville Road, but he no longer had the bag.

Miss Pencheon said Williams was detained and the officers then searched along the route Williams had taken. The bag was spotted on the roof of a petrol station and was found to contain packages of heroin and crack cocaine.

The bag also contained Williams’s membership card for the gym, cash and a mobile phone. Text messages were found on the mobile phone which related to drug supply.

The total street value of the drugs was around £200.

Williams, of Crosby Place, Holbeck, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply. The court heard Williams was arrested 11 days after the incident for driving while under the influence of drugs.

He has previous convictions for robbery and possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Sean Smith, mitigating, said Williams began dealing drugs after getting into financial difficulties. Williams had a partner and a child and was usually responsible. He was jailed for two years, eight months. Judge Guy Kearl, QC, said: “Because this is your second conviction for drug supply, and the other drug related convictions, I cannot avoid a custodial sentence.”
