Leeds dealer jailed after being caught with knife and more than £1,000 worth of cocaine, cannabis and MDMA in car in Armley

A dealer was in possession of over £1,000 worth of drugs and a knife when police stopped a car he was travelling in.

Shamar Gatewood was arrested after he gave a false name to police when they stopped the vehicle in Armley on October 13 this year.

Leeds Crown Court heard Gatewood was in the front passenger seat and the vehicle smelled of cannabis.

Elizabeth Noble, prosecuting, said the driver and the defendant both appeared nervous and under the influence of drugs.

Gatewood gave a false name to officers but his identity was revealed when a mobile fingerprint scanner was used on him at the scene.

The 23-year-old was searched and found in possession of a flick knife and a tub containing 21 wraps of cocaine.

Another bag containing drugs was found when he was searched in custody.

The total value of the drugs was just over £1,000.

Gatewood's home was searched and dealer bags and scales were found at the property.

The defendant's mobile phone was analysed and texts were recovered which he had sent advertising the bulk sale of illegal drugs.

During interview Gatewood told police the knife was part of his 'stock-in-trade' while dealing drugs and that he would be prepared to use it if necessary.

Gatewood, of Leopold Grove, Chapeltown, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a class A drug with intent to supply, one of possession of a class B drug with intent to supply and possession of a bladed article,

He was out of prison on licence at the time of his latest offending.

Timothy Jacobs, mitigating, said: "Shamar Gatewood is under no illusion of the position he finds himself in.

"His record is not one that does him credit but there was no history of drugs in his offending.

"He is still 23 years of age and has signs of increased maturity in him.

"He is now growing up and hopes in due course to make something of his life."

Gatewood was jailed for three years and ten months.
