Laughing thug threw partner down the stairs of Wakefield home after baseball-bat attack

A “rampaging” thug laughed after throwing his partner down a flight of stairs, having already hit her with a bottle and terrified her with a baseball bat.

Alan Stanley used the bat to smash up her phone, before locking her into the property in Knottingley.

The 35-year-old then threw her down the stairs, telling her she “deserved it”, and laughed before leaving.

He was jailed at Leeds Crown Court this week after admitting three counts of criminal damage, and was also found guilty of ABH after a summary trial.

Prosecutor Emily Hassell said the couple had been in a relationship since 2020 and had moved in together by 2021.

They both worked at the same factory, but their relationship was strained due to his use of drugs and alcohol and they would regularly argue and break up before reconciling.

On May 23 last year, she was at work and kept sending her messages, asking why she was not responding.

Ms Hassell said he would often monitor her whereabouts.

When she returned home at around 6.15pm that night, he questioned why she had not brought him any alcohol home and why she had ignored his messages. He also accused her of not spending time with him.

She went to bed but he then got into bed with her while he was fully clothed. She got out and told him she would sleep on the sofa instead. He then accused her of talking with other men.

She later woke up at around 11.30pm to the sound of Stanley coming down the stairs.

He entered the room with the baseball bat, snatched her phone from her and smashed it with the bat.

He then locked her in the property after she went upstairs to begin packing her bags. She noticed the windscreen of her car parked outside had also been smashed by Stanley.

After the situation calmed down, she went back to bed, but he then came into the room and attacked her, punching her to the face and head up to 10 times. He also struck her with the glass bottle.

He then threw her down the stairs, before stepping over her and laughing. After Stanley left, she was able to raise the alarm but the police were initially unable to get in because of the doors being locked.

The woman was later taken to hospital with injuries to her cheek, bruising to her face and her knee.

Stanley, of Maple Walk, Knottingley, handed himself in at Normanton Police Station two days later, giving a prepared statement and denying the incident.

He claimed he was right handed and could not have attacked her because that hand was injured at the time.

Mitigating, Sam Roxborough was limited on what could be said because of Stanley’s persistent denials of the attack. He did say that Stanley’s alcohol intake was “not an excuse” and that he had “behaved appallingly”.

The judge, Recorder Catherine Silverton told Stanley: “It was a prolonged and persistent rampage.

“It’s a matter of nothing more than good fortune that it did not lead to you being before this court for something more serious.”

She jailed him for 28 months and gave him a 10-year restraining order to keep him away from the woman.
